Family Tree Researchers - UK Genealogists Can I view the service papers of British Army soldiers online for free? No, but we might be able to search service papers for you (see below). Some service papers, attestations, discharge and pension documents have been digitalised and are available from pay-per-view genealogy websites, but not all classes of War Office records are available. Arrangement The records are arranged by era according to how the War Office originally indexed them during various periods of its history. Some records are arranged by regiment, others by order of the army and the rest alphabetically, there is also a couple of sub-classes dedicated to Mis-files - here one usually finds men with aliases.
Confused? The arrangement of British Army records is pretty confusing for non-experts. However, it is possible to research a soldier if we know: His full name, his year of birth or estimated year of birth, his place of birth, his Regiment, his service dates so that we can workout when he might have been discharged. In fact the more information you can provide as 'Identifiers', the more chance you have of finding him.
